Youtheatre began in 1964 as a program of the Detroit Institute of Arts, managed and conceived by director Michael (Mickey) Miners. Originally titled “Detroit Youtheatre”, it focused on providing an extension of the arts education that children received at the DIA as it quickly grew in awareness and popularity throughout Metropolitan Detroit. Offering performing arts experiences in varied disciplines such as puppetry, dance, music, drama, and mime, Detroit Youtheatre was a leader in the cultural community – and Mickey Miners was becoming a true icon in Metropolitan Detroit theatre.
In 1991, after almost 30 years at the DIA, the nationwide recession forced the decision to cut Detroit Youtheatre from the DIA’s programming. With so many children, teachers, and families touched by Detroit Youtheatre every season, Mickey and his staff decided to become a separate, self-contained non-profit performing arts organization, simply titled “Youtheatre”. Moving operations to Music Hall in Downtown Detroit, Youtheatre found a new home until the year 2000, when the newly renovated Millennium Centre in Southfield’s Cornerstone District offered a sparkling new home. Sadly, Mickey Miners would not be able to see Youtheatre’s transition into the new Millennium.
Although he passed away in 1999, Mickey’s vision continues to thrive and flourish today, as Youtheatre is Michigan’s largest non-profit center of professional performing arts for young people. Currently, Youtheatre presents performances to over 100,000 children every season, offering education, entertainment, and enrichment to kids throughout Southeastern Michigan.
From its humble beginnings in the early 1960’s to the current 40th Anniversary season, Youtheatre has become a vital organization in the Michigan performing arts community and continues to inspire children to follow their dreams.
Youtheatre, a non-profit organization dedicated to the performing arts, is based out of
The Millennium Centre, 15600 J.L. Hudson Drive, Southfield, MI 48075, and offers both the Field Trip to Broadway Series and Weekend Family Series. Both allow young people and their families to appreciate the richness of the varied disciplines and the multi-cultural aspects of the performing arts via live, professional theatre experiences. All Youtheatre performances are staged by professional actors, dancers, and musicians. Youtheatre also provides community outreach through the Disadvantaged Youth Program and Student Philanthropy Program.
