It was held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Belle Isle. There were FREE lunches for all registered attendees cooked up by the Firefighters. Plus, there was FREE School Supplies to all school-age children.
Linda Lee, the Mayor's Time Communications Director, has this to say about the event: "The key to the event is that it was a very comprehensive city-wide effort to get kids ready for back to school and after-school programs. In four hours parents got thier kids enrolled in school, learn about and signed up for after-school or church programs, received child identification kits, got free backpacks and school supplies. Information about how to keep youth safe during the school year was also provided. Also on site was Chris Weber, former University of Michigan Basketball superstar now playing for the Phidelphia 76ers. Mr. Weber signed autographs and distributed free books."
In addition to Youth Under Construction, other terrific family entertainment acts included:
Ronald McDonald
The Rapping Mentor and The Good Kids
Blackwell Institute Gospel Choir
Southeastern Steppers
Marcus Garvey Academy African Dance Troupe & Drummers
Radio Disney
Metro Cheer Team
AAA provided child identification kits and dental screening was available from Mobile Dentist. There were inflatable Moon Walks, face painting, field games (basketball, horseshoes), Video Game Mobile, Contests with great prizes.
Participants registered for school, signed up for after-school programs, discovered ways to resolve conflict and focus energy in more positive ways; obtain immunizations, receive lead, hearing and vision screenings; sign up for reduced cost or free school lunches, get information about proper use of infant and child car seats and get important information on many other services, resources and programs.
The event was supported and sponsored by Children's Hospital, Radio Disney, McDonalds, Wayne County Dept. of Human Services, Wayne County Community College District, Office Depo, Skillman Foundation, Tri-state Coca-Cola Bottlers and Comerica.
