Based in Lansing, MI, the Michigan Humanities Council has again honored Youth Under Construction live performances and assemblies by including our group in their Touring Directory Program. Schools and non-profit organizations have the opportunity to receive a grant for a portion of our presentation fees. The application process is simple and due beginning Sept. 1, 2009 for presentations booked after Oct. 1, 2009. The "YAK" is a special section of the the Free Press that caters to youth. With a readership of over 300,000, this is also delivered to many Detroit Public Schools. Once per week, the Skillman Foundation puts a spotlight on organizations or programs they have supported and the Sept. 18, 2007 edition featured "Youth Under Construction: Sing, Dance and Rap to Different Beat." This full-page article displayed 3 photos of the group. From a November, 2004 picture taken at a parade in Royal Oak, with "YAK," the furry mascot of the newspaper section, to a shot of the group that performed at the Mich. State Fair on Labor Day weekend 2007.

| S. Oakland YMCA Hosted Award-Winning MDYUC Performing Arts Program & Live Event |

ROYAL OAK- Friday, August 24, 6:30 pm- 8:30 pm, the youth involved in a summer Performing Arts Training Course presented the positive, nationally award-winning music of Youth Under Construction, in live concert-style performance. This event took place at the South Oakland Family YMCA on 1016 West 11 Mile Rd., just east of Woodward in Royal Oak was ALL-AGES friendly.
“We recognize the need for youth to be involved in positive activities in the after- school hours,” says Kendall Leone, Youth and Family Programs Manager. “The Youth Under Construction program welcomes parent involvment, making this YMCA the perfect one-stop for families to come together.”

| Brightmoor-area Youth presents Live Performance |

Just a few short months ago, the Youth Under Construction program started work in Detroit’s Brightmoor community. The program combines the performing arts with character education and has proven to shift student’s attitudes towards respect for others while building their self-confidence.
On Friday, May 4th, youth of various ages and talent levels presented a live demonstration of their skills as adapted to our award-winning, clean-lyric positive music program. A large number of residents from the community came together to celebrate this evening with us. We were also honored by the fact that Mr. Robert Thornton, Programs Officer for the Skillman Foundation, was a part of the introductions.
It has been a blessing to work with these youth who, thanks to the Skillman Foundation, were scholarshipped into the program. Please share information about our program with anyone you believe may be interested- we thank you in advance for that and truly hope you can join us at a future event!

| Skillman Grant brings MDYUC to Southwest Detroit's Latino Family Services |

Popular for it's fabulous eateries, southwest Detroit's Mexicantown district is now home to a powerful project proven to benefit youth. Thanks to the Skillman Foundation's "Good Neighborhoods Initiative" (GNI) grant program, Latino Family Services (LFS) will host the award-winning "Youth Under Construction" program.
The program is designed to build confidence and provide performing arts instruction for students at various skill levels. About a dozen youth from ages 10-15 will took part in a live presentation for the southwest Detroit community on Tuesday, December 19. The newly trained Youth Under Construction performers sang, danced, rapped and demonstrated their skills. The event was open to the public. Also included were presentations from other performing groups working at LFS and a special Holiday Celebration segment. For more info about LFS, call 313-841-7380. Youth Under Construction performed for Mayor's Time Back-to-School event with Radio Disney, others @ Belle Isle in Detroit
Mayor’s Time coordinated a citywide Back-to-School After-School Peacemakers Rally, which brought together a variety of sponsors and services focused on preparing students and their parents for the school year. Presented by Mayor’s Time, Detroit Public Schools, the City of Detroit (Mayor’s Office, Department of Health and Wellness Promotion, and Recreation Department), Belle Isle, Detroit Firefighters and Michigan Progressive Baptist Convention, the August 26 event drew more than 5,000 parents and children.

Nancy and Larry Johnson, supporters of the Youth Under Construction movement that relocated to Florida in 2003, are working to promote the positive MDYUC music movement in Port St. Lucie, FL. Lauren Johnson, their daughter, recently performed songs off the MDYUC CD as part of the "Firehouse Idol" singing competition and did an outstanding job! The judges curiosity was piqued- where did this song "Who am I?" come from? Lauren also performed "Opinions- I've Got Mine" with visiting friend and Wayne, MI resident Becky McClester in the competition. Youth Under Construction is pleased and proud to announce the movement is on the move... Port St. Lucie youth are encouraged to become a part of this. Larry Johnson, the original director of the MDYUC live show that premiered at the Second City venue in Detroit is also a member of Richard Street's touring "Temptations" group (performing the hits of the group worldwide).

| Exciting MDYUC Youth Programs Find a New Home |

Projects & programs Announced at Celebration featuring Motown Legend Martha Reeves Sun., Feb. 26 at the International Institute of Detroit
DETROIT, MI – Mello-D’s “Youth Under Construction” (MDYUC) is proud to announce a series of programs with the International Institute of Metropolitan Detroit (IIMD). The IIMD was founded in 1919 and, since its beginning, has been a key nonprofit agency in the Detroit metropolitan area. They offer ethnic enrichment presentations, diversity workshops, mentoring programs, citizenship assistance and also partners with Detroit public schools. Thousands of students are served by them. Enter MDYUC, musical program creators. The IIMD is looking forward to partnering with MDYUC to provide programs that will be offered to metro Detroit schoolchildren on a regular basis as part of a larger after-school initiative. Parents are encouraged to enroll their aspiring performing artists in the upcoming programs.
Kristin Kelley, of IIMD recognizes that “the mission of Youth Under Construction is not unlike our own. We hope to capitalize on the similarity of our missions to better serve the Detroit community. Both the IIMD and Youth Under Construction have consistently received positive responses from community leaders, educators and students; we are confident that together we can accomplish even more.”
This MDYUC-IIMD partnership was announced at the following event:
The African Market Place- A Celebration of the African American History Month
Sunday, February 26, 2006, 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM
at International Institute of Metropolitan Detroit, 111 East Kirby, Detroit (at the Northwest corner of East Kirby and John R, just North of the Detroit Institute of the Arts).
Guest performing celebrities included Motown legend Detroit Councilwoman Ms. Martha Reeves, MDYUC and others. The performers showcased their talents and their contribution to the beauty of the African American culture. All were honored by the International Institute.

| MDYUC & Phil. Curtain Call Creations to present “Kids Deserve a Better Rap |

EXPANSION IS IN THE AIR! MDYUC Detroit has grown outside it's Midwest borders to team up with Philadelphia’s student run Production Company, Curtain Call Creations to present a program called “Kids Deserve a Better Rap”. The after school program began early October, 2005 and includes 16 middle and high school students attending workshops in Rap, DJ, and Hip Hop. That’s right, Detroit fans, this production will feature live young DJs, scratchin’ on the turntables- an MDYUC first! The goal of “Kids Deserve a Better Rap” is to harness the power of Hip Hop and transform it into a mechanism for spreading a positive, character-building messages. The main theme, “Cool Beats- Clean Rhymes, for the young and intelligent,” is consistent with the Detroit-area model.
Three performances will take place on “Super Saturday,” December 10, 2005 at the new Adventure Aquarium on The Delaware Waterfront in Camden, New Jersey. The mini-show will be performed three times: 12:30 PM, 1:30 PM and 2:30 PM. Not only will guests enjoy almost 200,000 square-feet of sea and wildlife in a world-class aquarium, but Disney on Ice will be on-hand with giveaways and fun activities for the entire family.
Maureen Mullin, Executive and Artistic Director, has been hosting the award winning program from Detroit, meeting three times a week at her South Philadelphia studio, Curtain Call Creations. Some of Philadelphia’s top artistic dancers, DJ’s, musicians and rappers are staffing the program. Curtain Call Productions’ traveling musical road tour will open each set with a MDYUC song performed as the finale.
In January 2006, Kids Deserve A Better Rap, will expand to encompass The Greater Delaware Valley. For more details, click “Read More”

| Oakland Mall Hosted MDYUC Live Event Sept. 24 |

Oakland Mall, 412 W. 14 Mile Road in Troy hosted a Kids Care Fair presented by 93.1 Doug FM, 96.3 WDVD and Radio Disney. Booths were set up in center court to inform young families about topics such as nutrition, wellness and safety. Seminars were presented throughout the day on these topics. Youth Under Construction provided live entertainment with 45 minute shows at 11 am and 1 pm.

| St. Malachys Church hosted LIVE MDYUC Concert |

St. Malachys Catholic Church, 14115 14 Mile Rd. (east of Schoenherr) in Sterling Heights (48312) jammed with the positive vibes of Youth Under Construction on Fri., Aug. 26, 7-8:30 pm
The group presented the full-set concert-style show complete with lighting and special effects. The rooms great acoustics was an excellent platform for the groups positive lyrics. A special guest appearance by "Mr. Rudy- The Edu-tainer" ignited the crowd. Mr. Rudy performed "Any day above the ground is a good day".

February 18, 2004- The award winning, hip-hop musical with a positive message performed at Lutheran High East, 20150 Kelly Road, Harper Woods, MI from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 28, 2004. The group performed during the first hour and presented an interactive program from 2 – 3 p.m. that covered “How to deal with the bullies in our lives”. This event was sponsored by Wayne County Community College District.

The current Youth Under Construction group with performers aged 6-18 entertained a variety of crowds at various venues and events throughout 2003. Now the search is on to create a NEW group with the ability to perform during school and work hours. This group, called the “MDYUC Grads”, will be available to present the positive music of MDYUC in concert format and include audience-interactive segments within the show. On Monday, January 19th, MDYUC joined twelve other groups to honor and celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in a concert featuring the incomparable Aretha Franklin and Singers. This presentation at Greater Grace Temple, 23500 W. Seven Mile in Detroit, featured several gospel-oriented performers. MDYUC lead singer Jor el Quinn was a featured performer, and an exciting new version of “Keep Peace in the ’Hood!” with rappers Lady T and Steven Fagan PLUS breakdancing by The Detroit Hardcore Breaking Crews’ Haleem and Mary.
